Press digest - year 2009

Last year started optimistically for the chemical industry, but finished under the sign of the crisis - shrinking market, suspension of production and optimization of staff. Negative impact also came from rising prices of basic materials such as natural gas and timber. These processes affected the financial performance of the companies in this sector. Some of the companies ended 2008 at loss: despite increasing revenues over the previous year and investment in new production capacities. Other sectors, such as FMCG, were not hurt so much by the crisis. An example is Ficosota Synthes. The company holds a large part of the market and laundry detergents in the country and now operates more than ten markets in Southeast Europe. The company also produces personal care products and owns the snacks producer Ital Foods. "The crisis found us at appropriate time. We completed the investment in new plant and logistics center and in the first five months of 2009 we reported a 35 percent growth on the Bulgarian market. We are looking forward to good results," said Krassen Kyurkchiev, manager of the company. Investments of Ficosota Synthes for the past two years amounts to over BGN 40 million.

For the first time the leader of the TV advertising market in Bulgaria is different from the international giant Procter & Gamble. The biggest advertiser in the world has shrunk its budget for TV advertising by 47%, which led to it dropping to fifth position in the rankings for the first six months of 2009, according to data from monitoring TNS/TV Plan. The place reserved for P&G, is now occupied by another global conglomerate - Nestle. Among the traditionally represented in the top 50 companies, the most impressive growth comes from FS (Ficosota Synthes). With an increase of 107 percent, they managed to climb from 13th to 2nd place in the rankings with a budget of BGN 13.7 million. "The time of crisis is an appropriate time for winning new market share - consumers are more careful and pragmatic in their choices and need a specific reason to buy a particular product, said the division manager for home products and personal hygiene in the company Ilina Lilova.
