Kozloduy NPP Unit 6 shuts down again due to failure On February 15, the 6th unit of the Kozloduy NPP was shut down again - for the third time since the beginning of December. The reason is still the same, namely the rupture of a protective membrane in the separator-steam generator of one of the turbines. "The membrane in question is replaced every 4 years and so far there have been no problems. In 2024, our country requested a derogation to supply the part in question from the Russian manufacturer, which we receive in May 2025. Due to the delay, the company that won the public contract to supply the original part indicates that the price has increased. The management of the Kozloduy NPP refused the order and assigned the Bulgarian company "Energoremont" to manufacture the membrane in question," says energy expert Prof. Georgi Kaschiev - former chief physicist of the plant and scientific manager of the launch of the Fifth Unit. The price of this part is not that high - about 280 thousand leva. After all, the change is in the non-nuclear part of the plant and there is no radiation leakage. However, with so many turbine stops and starts and the thermal cycle is disrupted, the materials wear out and an even bigger accident of the steam generator can occur. Because of the stops since December, the sixth unit has produced over 400 megawatt hours less electricity than the fifth unit, due to which the plant suffers losses of about 60 million euros.
